Gaston: An In-Depth Analysis
Alright, friends. Settle in. We've got A LOT to talk about. The subject? Gaston from Beauty and the Beast.
Unlike Sunday's post about Kocoum, I'm not here to tell you that Gaston was a totally good guy or that Belle should've married him. But there are some things we need to consider before judging his character. Was he as bad as we thought?
YES, Gaston for sure had some attitude problems. He was full of himself and didn't think women should think or read. Yuck! But may I remind you that the Beast was constantly yelling and growling at Belle and breaking things? He for sure needed to chill, and it is going to take more than one happy musical montage to deal with those issues.
And let's address one of the big moments where we started to believe that Gaston was truly evil: he sent Belle's father, Maurice, to an insane asylum. That's definitely not cool. But the Beast, who is supposed to be the good guy ALSO imprisoned Belle's father earlier in the movie. And the only reason he decided to let him go, was that Belle took his place. So the Beast imprisoned her AND her father, but I guess because he felt bad about it later, we are supposed to be all "yeah ok, NBD".
So yes, Gaston's actions were bad, but not worse than the Beast's. At least the insane asylum probably would've kept Maurice fed and in good health.
And then when Gaston tried to kill the Beast, we all got mad. But honestly, I think he just wanted to protect Belle. Sure, he was dumb, and close minded about the whole situation. But maybe his intentions were good? I mean, he had just discovered that the woman he loved had been imprisoned in an old castle by a guy who is basically Bigfoot. If you knew someone in that situation, would you not be concerned???
Let me say, for the record: IF I AM KIDNAPPED BY BIGFOOT, I WOULD LIKE SOMEONE TO SEND HELP.
What do you guys think? Which one was the hero, and which one was the villain? Or were they equally bad for Belle?
