The Little Mermaid: An In-Depth Analysis

Most people I know list The Little Mermaid as one of their favorite Disney movies. And I agree! It's wonderful. Especially the music. But can we talk about some things?

1. Isn't it a little creepy that Ariel is so obsessed with Eric when she truly doesn't even know him? I mean, I know teenagers can be a bit obsessive (hello? me and the Hanson brothers), but she literally keeps a statue of him in her room that she talks to.

2. Speaking of being a teenager, ARIEL IS SIXTEEN. Girl... you are seriously a child. Listen to your father. (But your father could tone it down a notch too)

3.Eric SEES Ariel on the beach. Does he really not think she is the same person just because she loses her voice? And if he really doesn't recognize her, but falls in love with her, but was also in love with "singing Ariel", does that mean he is just desperate to fall in love with anyone who comes along?

He does seem pretty lonely. His only activities are boating, hanging out with Max the Dog and playing the flute.

4. Okay, Ariel loses her voice, but could she not just write a note to Eric saying, "Hey, can you kiss me? A sea witch has my voice and that's the only way to get it back."?

"But she probably can't write", you may argue. However, she does sign her own name on Ursula's contract. And she does seem to have a pretty great grasp on the English language (Except for "feet", "street", and "burn").

Plus, Eric seems to be able to hear Sebastian's voice during "Kiss the Girl". So I don't really get why it was so difficult to tell him.

5. When Ariel first gets legs, Scuttle makes her a dress. How does said dress go from the hot mess on the left to the tailored, fashionable piece on the right? And where can I purchase the 2nd dress?

6. When Ariel goes to stop Eric's wedding to Ursula, she has to be pulled along by Flounder the fish. First of all, that absolutely wouldn't work (a tiny fish can not pull along a full-grown human holding onto a large barrel), but second of all, she has been swimming for 16 years and has always had arms. Are you really telling me she doesn't have any idea how to swim with her arms? You'd think her arms would be SUPER strong from treading water for so long.

7. King Triton allows Ariel to move out and go marry Eric at the end of the movie. Sixteen seems a little young for that, but whatever.

8. One last thing that is a personal preference. The dress that Triton gives her when he gives her back her legs is a BAZILLION TIMES prettier than her wedding dress. So, I would like to change that, please. I mean....look how pretty and glittery it is.

Anything you'd like to add, friends?

  1. 1) Yes, I am one of those perpetrators with this is my top 3, as you know.
    2) You know, writing class was probably difficult, impractical and extremely limited under the sea-- I mean, can you imagine? How could you even keep paper intact long enough to write on it with that much moisture? It would just disintegrate before your very eyes. It's a miracle she even knew how to write her name. I think THAT'S what we really need to question, not why she couldn't write anything else.
    3) I have absolutely no defense to any of your other points. They are all very valid and this movie is a little ridiculous.
